Faster, higher, stronger: TEIN2 and ORIENT win gold medal for IPv6 at Beijing Olympics

Friday 8 August 2008, Cambridge, UK: Members of the international research and education community have the unique opportunity to get the latest on the 2008 Beijing Olympics by visiting http://ipv6.beijing2008.cn/en/ * -  the IPv6 version of the official Games website which, for the first time in the history of this international sport event, has been developed using next generation Internet technology.

Beijing Olympic logo  Hosted by China Education and Research Network (CERNET/CNGI-CERNET2), the nationwide academic backbone, the website will provide faster and more secure access to the Beijing Olympics information.  IPv6 users across Asia-Pacific and Europe can visit the site thanks to TEIN2 -the IPv6-enabled Trans-Eurasia Information Network -, the ORIENT circuit  and their interconnection to Europe’s multi-gigabit network GÉANT2.

IPv6 is the sixth version of the Internet Protocol designed to provide a solution to the problem of IPv4 domain space running out.  IPv6 has a much larger address space, which allows flexibility in allocating addresses and routing traffic, thus alleviating congestion.

At the forefront of Internet development, research networks like CERNET/CNGI-CERNET2, TEIN2 and ORIENT act as a demonstrator and enabler for IPv6 and are inspired by the same motto as athletes: faster, higher, stronger!
