Project Management

Effective and efficient management of such a large and complex project requires well-defined and well-organised management and control structures. Several bodies contribute to the overall successful running of the project.

Policy Committee

The Policy Committee (often referred to as the NREN PC) consists of appointed representatives from each partner in the project. It meets at least three times a year, and is responsible for setting and overseeing overall policy. The Policy Committee Chairman (currently Dr Vasilis Maglaris) is elected by the committee members for a two-year term.

The Policy Committee has appointed a second body to contribute to the management of the GÉANT2 project - the Executive Committee.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee consists of a small group elected by the Policy Committee. It is primarily responsible for preparing the yearly work programme for the project, and for quality assurance and supervision relating to its implementation.

Its voting members at present are as follows:

  • Marko Bonac (ARNES)
  • Jan Gruntorad (CESNET)
  • Ivan Maric (CARNET)
  • Boudewijn Nederkoorn (SURFnet)
  • Klaus Ullmann (DFN, Chair)

The committee also includes a number of non-voting members, who are made up of individuals occupying the following posts within key research networking organisations (the current postholders' names are given after each position in parentheses):

  • NREN PC Chair (Vassilis Maglaris, former director of GRNET)
  • DANTE Chair (Klaus Ullmann, DFN)
  • DANTE General Managers (Dai Davies and Hans Döbbeling)
  • DANTE CFO (Matthew Scott)
  • TERENA President (Dorte Olesen)
  • TERENA Secretary (Karel Vietsch)

Project Co-ordinator

DANTE provides overall project management, and co-ordinates the project's various activities. It is responsible for financial and administrative work, including delivering progress reports to the EC. As the project co-ordinator, DANTE is also responsible for public relations activity, including the hosting and maintenance of this site, and for overall communications between the project and the EC.

Technical Management

The direct management of technical activities within the project is carried out by technical activity leaders. Technical activities are overseen by the Technical Committee, which comprises the activity leaders of:

  • The GÉANT2 Research and Development Programme
  • Co-ordination of research and development initiatives (primarily the Task Forces)
  • Support for Multi-Domain Services package.

The Committee is chaired by DANTE's Chief Technical Officer, Roberto Sabatino.

More information about the management of these activities can be found in the Operations and Research sections of this site.
