GÉANT2 Launch Event

Abbaye de Neumünster, Luxembourg City
GÉANT2, the latest pan-European research and education network, was officially launched on 14 June in Luxembourg.
“GÉANT2 is a truly giant step forward. With this modern network, we will ensure that researchers will be better and faster connected everywhere in Europe than anywhere else in the world”, said Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding in her speech during the Opening Ceremony.
Following a substantial upgrade of the network, GÉANT2 will provide a Europe-wide “roaming” service that enables scientists to access the network and their home university’s working environments from anywhere, at any time.
The programme on the following day featured presentations on the nature of the new network, on the opportunities and challenges of global research networking, and on the importance of understanding and meeting the users’ requirements.
Over 200 delegates from across the globe attended the event, among others, senior representatives of the European and global research networking community, politicians and decision-makers, representatives of the user community, and infrastructure and equipment suppliers.
