Network Engineer (Operations)

DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe), plans, builds and operates advanced networks for research and education. We are seeking applications for the position of Network Engineer (Operations) to be based in Cambridge.

The Role

The Operations department is responsible for the development, installation, operations and security of all network elements and network services managed by DANTE (currently GÉANT2, EUMEDCONNECT and DANTE World Service). The work involves the implementation, operation and security of network services at the DWDM, SDH and IP levels and the transport of Gigabit Ethernet over SDH. The operations department also actively participates in several research activities carried out in collaboration with other members of the research community.

The role is part of a specialised Performance Enhancement & Response Team capable of trouble shooting networking problems at different layers (physical, data, network and transport layers). Candidates should be specialised in the transport layer and should be capable of interacting at a very technical level with customers and other members of the team.

Responsibilities include acting as the first point of contact, receive and investigate reports of sub-optimal network connectivity, coordinate joint efforts with engineers from other networks to investigate and resolve network performance issues, produce regular reports on the number and nature of problems investigated and add appropriate information to the organisation's knowledge base.  Participate in ‘Prove of Concept’ testing and assist and advise other Organisations that wish to put in place the Performance Enhancement & Response Team.

The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level, preferably in a scientific/technical subject, have a solid understanding and proven competency in network protocols, in particular TCP/IP, Wide Area Networks and network troubleshooting tools.  Candidates must possess good verbal and written communication skills and have a good command of English.
