Achievements of GÉANT2
GÉANT2, the high bandwidth, pan-European network, has played a key role in shaping global research and education over the past 4 years. By connecting researchers, the network enables the best minds across Europe and the world to together pursue collaborative and ground-breaking research activities that were previously impossible or inefficient due to limited and poor quality data connections.
Global research is becoming increasingly important. With the EU’s commitment to global outreach and vision in creating a single global research network for international collaboration, GÉANT2 has extended its reach and has narrowed the global digital divide with its links to other EU-funded initiatives in developing world regions: TEIN2 (Asia-Pacific), ALICE (Latin America), EUMEDCONNECT (Mediterranean) and ORIENT (China link).
An important part of the EU’s vision of a European Research Area has been realised by the advanced, hybrid GÉANT2 network and the multi-domain network services made available through GÉANT2 and the connected NRENs. The aim to support Europe’s researchers with state-of-the-art facilities means that research and education networks are reserved for use by the academic community, and the innovative services that the network provide, position GÉANT2 as a world-leading research network, years ahead of those provided by their commercial counterparts. The provision of enhanced bandwidth, point-to-point links and a range of multi-domain services help keep researchers at the forefront of their respective fields of research, retaining and developing academic expertise in Europe and ultimately boosting Europe’s competitiveness.
