GEANT, a Global Leader – now and into the future

Antti Peltomaki (Deputy Director General, Information Society and Media at the EC), described GÉANT2 as having changed network performance requirements and having achieved great success by helping to bridge the digital divide between many worldwide regions. He spoke about how high-speed research networking allowed research into areas that cannot be recreated, such as disease, weather and astronomy and how bringing together the best minds from around the world has resulted in many scientific achievements. He said that the aim for seamless research requires synergy from all groups, and commitment from all member states, in future GÉANT networks.

Tomaz Kalin closed the day’s proceedings by concluding that “GÉANT2 is a great success, not only in technology terms but also for the users”.
