SWITCH Hosts Successful GÉANT2 Security Toolset Train-the-Trainer Event
Friday 28 March 2008, Cambridge, UK: A total of 13 people from 11 different European countries became approved GÉANT2 Security Toolset Trainers last week after a pilot train-the-trainer course held at SWITCH's offices in Zurich, Switzerland on 18th and 19th March 2008. The initial day of the training provided an introduction to National Research and Education Network (NREN) representatives of the GÉANT2 Security Toolset, a suite of network monitoring and data retrieval tools to aid security incident handling. Participants learned how to use the Toolset's analysis software to dig into network data to investigate the causes of network security incidents, such as denial of service attacks. The second day of the course focused on the 'soft skills' of training delivery, communication and presentation skills. The 13 participants are now qualified to deliver GÉANT2 Security Toolset training to users in thier local communities, potentially in their own native languages.
Peter Webster from DANTE, who leads the knowledge transfer activities of the GÉANT2 project, said that the course went very well and the attendees seemed to appreciate the content. The feedback about the course material was also extremely positive. The training organisers plan to use this feedback to further improve the course before the next train-the-trainer session, which is scheduled for later in the year.
This first pilot course was co-organised by DANTE and TERENA, and was held in the offices of the Swiss national research networking organisation, SWITCH. The course materials were developed by SWITCH, DANTE and by the Czech national research networking organisation, CESNET, as part of the GÉANT2 project.
