GÉANT2 demonstrations at ICT 2008
Three projects that utilise the high bandwidth and geographical reach of GÉANT2 were demonstrated at ICT 2008.
GÉANT2 booth, ICT Connects area
ASTRA project
A team of scientists have taken archaeological findings of ancient musical instruments and, harnessing the computing power of GÉANT2, have been able to recreate the sounds using complex digital modelling techniques. The team will demonstrate the sounds of the epigonion, an Ancient Greek string instrument, by performing a musical score that has never been heard.

Millennium Simulations project
The Earth System Model, created using climate data for natural external factors and man-made effects, allows scientists to simulate the climate from the last millennium and into the future. This research relies on employing many computer processors in parallel, which is only possible using the immense bandwidth capacity and geographical reach of the GÉANT2 network.

BELIEF booth, International Village area
Brazilian Telehealth Initiative
Demonstrating the importance of the global reach of high bandwidth international research networks is the Brazilian Telehealth Initiative. Based in Brazil, this project uses the GÉANT2 and ALICE networks to connect doctors around the world. This collaboration of knowledge and resource enables diagnosis and second opinions for rare conditions, remotely supervised surgical procedures and medical advice and education to reach inaccessible rural locations.
