Leonardo Da Vinci, from Italy to Japan at the speed of light, on board the GARR Network
GARR Press Release
GARR technological partner of the 2nd Italian – Japanese Networking Symposium: Technology of the latest generation for Cultural Heritage
6th December 2006, Florence and Tokyo: GARR, the National Academic and Research Network, provides the networking and videoconferencing support to the 2nd Italian-Japanese Symposium “New Technologies on the way of Culture”, organized by the Tuscany Region in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the Italian Embassy in Tokyo.
The Event will take shape as a “networking symposium” and will connect the Italian Cultural
Institute in Tokyo with the premises of the Regional Council of Tuscany, from which participants will be able to interact in real time using the DVTS technology.
As a latest technology generation tool, DVTS (Digital Video Transport System) allows audio/video transmission at a very high definition (used for remote performances and music education) using 30Mbps for the transmission, about 100 times greater than normal video-conference services. The use of this new system is made possible also by the very wide bandwidth provided by the National Academic and Research Network, from the International Research Networks to which it connects to and to the Tuscany Regional Network (RTRT). For the occasion a new direct connection between Europe and Asia will be used, supporting the new protocol of Internet IPv6, too.
A further example on how new technologies can promote collaboration at international level in an area that usually isn’t considered particularly technology-aware, as the one Arts and Humanities, breaking down geographical barriers and making interaction between different continents easy and transparent: almost as if live physical presence is achieved.
GARR, in collaboration with Internet2 and GÉANT2, respectively the American Research Network and the pan-European one, have already organized events that were transmitted in real time thanks to the DVTS technology.
