3rd Level NOC engineer

GEANT2 uses cutting edge technology to provide IP and wavelength services to the National Research Networks in Europe. GEANT2 uses Juniper and Alcatel equipment to provide these services

The Role

DANTE is looking for a 3rd Level support engineer to work in its Network Operations Centre located in Cambridge. A 3rd Level support is an advanced support provided to the GEANT2 network users focus in solving the most difficult and challenging problems found in the network.

Responsibilities include setting up NOC Monitoring tools, set up of incident and problem management procedures to be used by the 1st Level  and 2nd Level 2 NOC Engineers, troubleshooting issues related with network infrastructure, hardware and applications, and assisting with escalations as requested by engineers or management.  The role also requires the collating, processing and presenting of all records and data in a timely and appropriate manner and providing internal training for the 1st Level and 2nd Level engineers.

The role requires you to provide on call support outside of normal office hours.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience in NOC environments; have excellent technical and problem solving skills, along with the ability to work well both independently and within a small team.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an ability to learn new products and network technologies quickly, often without the focus of formalised training and will have advanced troubleshooting skills in at least one of the following areas:

  • IP routing, BGP and ISIS
  • Switching and Ethernet
  • Transmission

Additional experience in areas such as multicast, IPv6, QoS or technologies like GFP,VCAT and LCAS will be highly considered and previous experience using at least one of the following tools: Nagios, Infovista, HP OpenView, Remedy and basic scripting abilities would be an advantage.

The position is based in Cambridge and involves travel, mainly in Europe and occasionally worldwide.
