Systems Engineer (Systems Team)
DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe), plans, builds and operates advanced networks for research and education. We are seeking applications for the position of Systems Engineer.
The Role
The Systems team is responsible for a broad range of applications and services running on the network including Security, Authentication and Authorisation Infrastructures (AAI), Capacity Provisioning, Performance Monitoring and Management.
The Systems team is also responsible for the operation of DANTE’s IT infrastructure in a Unix/Linux and Windows environment. It provides user support for desktop clients, VPN, email, wireless network access, video-conferencing, development tools etc.
The Systems Engineer will work on the development of network wide security systems based on the collection and analysis of data such as NetFlow, BGP, Router Logs, SNMP, and will also participate in software development and external projects in addition to supporting DANTE’s IT infrastructure.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Evaluate, customise and implement network security software based on the collection and analysis of data such as NetFlow, BGP, Router Logs, SNMP etc
- Design, develop and implement network security oriented Information Systems including web services and portals
- Testing, documentation, training end users and support of software systems
- Manage the introduction of AA technologies across all DANTE web presences (e.g. web sites, portals, wiki etc).
- Participate in development, implementation and coordination AA Infrastructure on a pan-European scale
The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level in computer science or information systems; a masters degree will be an advantage.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate a good understanding of Network Security & AA Infrastructures and have an understanding of the security threats affecting core networks and end systems, and of the technologies to detect and counter such threats.
A working knowledge of NetFlow, BGP, Router Logs, SNMP data collection and analysis, statistical data analysis, hands on development experience in Unix and Windows environment, programming skills in C, Java, PERL, working knowledge of web-based development and associated technologies is required.
Candidates must possess good interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, be proactive and a quick learner.
The position is based in Cambridge and involves International travel.
