Multi-domain services

GÉANT2 achievements multi domain large  A key objective of the GÉANT2 joint research programme has been to develop innovative products and services. Using skills and expertise from DANTE and the NRENs, these joint research activities have tackled the multi-domain challenge of creating solutions that work across different networks and geographical domains. A number of ground-breaking network services are in development to enhance the network user’s experience. The aim of this novel research is a seamless, multi-domain, hybrid networking environment that delivers flexible and scalable production-quality services for users. Not only does this boost Europe’s research competitiveness and contribute to technology standards and policies, but these future services also demonstrate real value for the commercial marketplace.

Performance monitoring and measurement: perfSONAR, currently in development, will offer comprehensive multi-domain monitoring features that track and isolate network issues and allow network administrators to gain an overview of the network

Performance Enhancement Response Team (PERT): The PERT team provides a reliable, rapid investigation and consultation service to NREN administrators and end users for troubleshooting and resolving network issues

Mobility and roaming: eduroam allows users to easily gain secure internet access at any other eduroam-enabled institution. Authentication is done by eduGAIN to allow seamless, secure sharing of identity data between co-operating federations

Security: A number of integrated Security systems identify, track and counteract malicious attacks across multiple domains and regions

Bandwidth on demand: Currently at research stage, AutoBAHN will allow users to request on-demand, dedicated network circuits spanning multiple countries, for high volume, high capacity data transfers
