Security Deliverables

The links below provide access to the outputs (or formal notification of their completion) of the Security Joint Research Activity. These have been presented to the European Commission as "deliverables", to provide evidence of the project's progress.

  • 11 August 2008[pdf] GN2-08-170: DJ2.1.1,5 - Revised GÉANT2 Security Recommendation and Policy (433 Kb)
This document is an update to the 4th Security Recommendation and Policy deliverable, "DJ2.1.1,4: Revised GÉANT2 Security Recommendation and Policy DJ2.1.1,4". The purpose of this document is to provide insight into how a network such as GÉANT2 is secured and to provide a checklist of best practices. It is hoped that this will assist NREN operators, their connected end sites and any other parties that may find it useful in securing their own networks.
  • 7 September 2007[pdf] Findings of the Advanced Anomaly Detection Pilot (DJ2.2.4) (107 Kb)
Advanced anomaly detection is the process in which network traffic patterns are continuously and if possible near real-time monitored in order to detect deviations from the ordinary. These deviations usually form a strong first indication that traffic flows on a monitored network are not according to what was to be expected in a normal operational context. By developing sophisticated methods for anomaly detection and deploying these methods in pilot environments, an overall improvement of the security levels of a monitored network can be achieved.
  • 3 September 2007[pdf] Review of Policy Issues for Development of Global Connectivity(DS4.0.4) (99 Kb)
This deliverable sets out the “non-cost sharing” policy issues on global connectivity that have been developed in GÉANT2
  • 28 August 2007[pdf] Report on Activities and Recommendations of JRA2 Advisory Panel DJ2.5.1,3 (94 Kb)
This deliverable reports about the composition, activities and recommendations of the advisory panel to JRA2. The panel consist of security specialists from several different fields and is intended to comment on the work carried out by JRA2, to give an overview of trends and evolution of network security and incident handling processes and to give recommendations for work in subsequent years of JRA2. This is the third deliverable of this panel, covering the third year of JRA2 activities.
  • 1 August 2007[pdf] GN2-07-199v3: DJ2.4.1,3 - Report onGÉANT2 (Ad-hoc) Security Advisory Groups in Year 3 (68 Kb)
Wirk Item 4 (Relationship with TF-CSIRT) of JRA2 (Security) details the relationship with the TERENA Taskforce TF-CSIRT (Collaboration of Security Incident Response Teams). One item of this collaboration is the creation of ad-hoc teams to deliver security advice to any activity within GN2 that requests it. This deliverable reports on cases of advice requested and how the cases were handled.
  • 21 June 2007[pdf] Security Service Specification (DJ2.3.2) (328 Kb)
This document specifies the elements needed to run the GÉANT2 Security Service, and defines which elements are either optional or mandatory.
  • 17 May 2007[pdf] User and Test Report on NetFlow Probe (DJ2.2.2,2) (2500 Kb)
Flow-based monitoring using Cisco NetFlow has been identified by GÉANT2 Joint Research Activity 2 (JRA2) as the principal souce of data for security analysis and intrusion detection. In order to make NetFlow data available in all locations of both the trans-European and NREN backbone networks, JRA2 started the development of an autonomous Netflow probe named FlowMon. This second version of the deliverable summarises test results and other experiences from the five GÉANT2 partners who have been testing both the prototype and the final version of the FlowMon probe with Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.
  • 1 May 2007[pdf] Plan for Transition of JRA2 into Production (DJ2.0.1) (97 Kb)
This Deliverable addresses issues around and plans in place to bring JRA2 into production
