ICT 2008
GÉANT2, the high bandwidth, pan-European research network, an important role at this year’s ICT conference. As one of the event sponsors and providing international connectivity to the event, GÉANT2 was also showcased in the ICT Connects exhibition area. The booth dispalyed many of the achievements of the network and included two live user demonstrations that revealed the importance of GÉANT2 to many cutting edge research projects.
The ASTRA project showed how the network has been used to model the sounds of ancient musical instruments and the Millennium Simulations project illustrated how the huge capacity of GÉANT2 has been vital to the creation of historical and predictive climate models. A further GEANT2 user demonstration, Brazilian Telehealth Initiative, took place on the BELIEF booth in the International Village exhibition area. This showed how the global reach of GEANT2 and other network has enabled telehealth to improve the standard and accessibility of medical care in Brazil.
During the opening ceremony, Commissioner Viviane Reding (Member of the European Commission with responsibility for Information Society and Media), commented that GEANT2 was one of the greatest successes of the EC e-infrastructure programme. Dai Davis, DANTE’s General Manager, also presented on GÉANT2: enabling the user at the Virtualising Global Research session.
