Who Uses GÉANT2?

The availability of research networks allows researchers to develop new techniques that would previously not have been possible. Numerous ambitious new uses for the network are being investigated by groups of users working across Europe and the globe.

GÉANT is already supporting a number of these special projects. More details on some of these are available from the links below or in the left-hand menu.

  • BioCASE is a web-based information service providing researchers with unified access to biological collections across Europe

  • CERN’s most ambitious project to date, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), is currently under construction. The analysis of the massive amounts of data produced by this facility, said to be the largest scientific endeavour in history, will be supported by GÉANT2 and its connected NRENs

  • DEISA is a consortium of leading national supercomputing centres in Europe. It aims to jointly build and operate a distributed terascale supercomputing facility. Each end site is connected to its local NREN, and to each other via the GÉANT network, with high guaranteed capacity

  • The European VLBI Network (EVN) is the collaboration of major radio astronomical institutes in Europe that works together on the data collected by an array of European radio telescopes. GÉANT is supporting the work of the EVN through the provision of network resources to allow rapid data transfer

  • Network testbeds such as those created by the MUPBED (MUlti-Partner European TestBEDs for research networking) project allow researchers to test new technologies and techniques on a truly pan-continental scale. MUPBED is a consortium of telecommunications equipment manufacturers, commercial and research network operators, and networking research centres from eight European countries
